Kogi State Government flags off State-wide campaign on Tree Planting and Climate Smart Agriculture.

In an effort to combat the effects of climate change and carbon emissions into the atmosphere, the Kogi State Government has commenced a tree planting and Climate Smart Agriculture campaign in the three Senatorial Districts of the State.

At the flag-off ceremony, which held in the premises of St. Barnabas Secondary School, Kabba, His Excellency, Governor Yahaya Adoza Bello (CON), who was represented by the Hon. Commissioner for Environment who also doubles as the Chairman, State Steering Committee of the ACReSAL, Hon. (Chief) Omofaiye Victor Adewale, while delivering the Welcome Address, said… “We are just planting trees, but also sowing the seeds of a sustainable future for Kogi State”; stating that the State aims at planting 17,166 trees and also restoring about 600 hectares of land across the State.

The Hon. Commissioner, also stressed that the State Government had put in place policies aimed at discouraging Forest encroachment, while increasing sustainable tree-planting practices in communities.

In her opening remarks, the Project Coordinator, Barr. Ladi Ahmed Jatto (OON) stated that the Project Development Objective of the Project, among other things, is geared towards strengthening long-term framework of integrated climate resilience landscape management; and a sure way to achieving this feat is by embarking on rigorous tree planting campaign in the State.

The Project Coordinator then took time to enumerate the effects of climate change, global warming and carbon emissions to the environment.

In his goodwill message at the event, the Obaro of Kabba, His Royal Majesty, Oba Solomon Owoniyi, who was visibly delighted, expressed his appreciation to the Word Bank and Kogi State Government for the initiative, considering the benefits of trees to Mankind.

The Royal father then promised to key into the initiative, and work towards ensuring its sustainability in KABBA land.

The highlight of the event saw the planting of tree seedlings by the Governor’s representative, Hon. Omofaiye Victor Adewale, His Royal Highness, the Obaro of Kabba, the Project Coordinator, as well as other invited dignitaries and guests…

The tree-planting campaign is expected to take place in all the Senatorial Districts of the State…
