KOGI STATE GOVERNMENT ESTABLISHES ENVIRONMENTAL CLUBS IN SCHOOLS…

Establishment of Environmental clubs in schools. Professor harps on the need for the inclusion of Environmental practice into schools’ curriculum.

The Kogi State Government, through the instrumentality of the Kogi ACReSAL Project and JEMEG 77 INITIATIVE for SOCIAL EMPOWERMENT, a Focal NGO working with Kogi ACReSAL on Community Sensitization and Engagement, recently established Environmental Clubs in some selected schools across the State.

Addressing staff and students in the selected schools, Professor Abu Ameh, Team Lead for JEMEG 77 INITIATIVE for SOCIAL EMPOWERMENT, emphasized the need to promote sustainable Environmental practices, as well as raise awareness on causes and consequences of detrimental environmental issues and practices in our communities.

According to the Professor, Environmental education, using educational materials, sensitization campaigns, talks on the effects of climate change and biodiversity, are essential in ensuring environmental sustainability.

Engineer Monday Negedu, a staff of the Focal NGO, in his remarks, stated that host communities are encouraged to participate in environmental conservation efforts; he also added that children ought to be taught critical thinking and problem solving skills that would benefit their future careers.

At the end of each visit, Environmental Clubs were established in each school.
These clubs are expected to, among other things, work on projects that would address environmental issues like waste management and tree planting.
The clubs will ensure that the rules of waste management, which is Reuse, Reduce and Recycle are strongly enforced.

This activity by Kogi State ACReSAL comes under “Component B” of the ACReSAL ‘PDO (Project Development Objective).

Schools visited include: – St. Barnabas College, Kabba, St Charles College, Ankpa and Etahi Community Secondary School, Okene.
