KOGI STATE EMBARKS ON LAND RESTORATION PROGRAM TO BOOST AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY
Kogi State Government has launched a Land Restoration program to combat land degradation and boost agricultural productivity through climate smart agriculture.
With effective technical support from the Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO), the first phase aims to restore 200 Ha of degraded land across 11 locations in the State; these include – Ajovo, Achoze, Odugbo, Kabba, Eti- Eke ,Ojodu, Ochaja, Kpata, Owara, and Okumi.
The program seeks to strengthen farmers’ and extension service providers’ capacity to adopt climate-smart agricultural practices through training, technical assistance, and financial support; this will enable them to adopt practices like planting drought-resistant crop varieties and agroforestry which will invariably improve their livelihoods.
The Project promotes sustainable land management practices which aims at restoring land health and productivity, whilst also enhancing ecological resilience, and support community well-being.
Currently, land preparing has commenced; the use of tractors for ploughing, Ridging, and planting has since started. The Project is taking advantage of the late rainy season to clear land and provide drought-resistant seedlings like cowpeas, sesame seeds, cassava, and maize to farmers.
