In addition to its desire to mitigate the devastation of gully erosion in Kogi State, the Government of Ahmed Usman Ododo, through the instrumentality of the ACReSAL Project has put in motion, plans to properly channel and harvest rainwater/run-off water in selected communities of intervention across the State.
Welcoming bidders during the Bid Closing and Opening- for the engagement of a competent Contractor for the Water Harvesting assignment, the Project Coordinator, Kogi ACReSAL, Barr. Ladi Ahmed Jatto – OON said the initiative was important and timely since it was meant to capture run-off water during rainfall, thereby mitigating the attendant effect of uncontrolled rainwater/run-off water on gully erosion in the State.
The Project Coordinator who was represented by the Project Accountant, Pastor Michael Ojo, while assuring the seven (7) bidders of transparency during the evaluation process, said that apart from reducing incidences of gully erosion, water harvesting will assist the communities with water supply, especially during the dry season.
The Project Coordinator used the opportunity to extol His Excellency, Ahmed Usman Ododo for his untiring support to the Project; she said that the Water Harvesting Project is expected to capture run-off water from the Upper and Lower Catchments of Etahi, Omigbo, and Ankpa Gully Sites, as a way of preventing it from causing further harm to the environment.
It is also of noteworthy that, the Kogi State Government has Installed 21 Solar Powered Boreholes, and several streetlights in carefully selected rural communities in the State; these are communities without potable water and electricity, as a way of improving their livelihood, boosting economic activities and reducing the impact of global warming and climate change in the State.
